I've solved the problem by manually typing :
# ln -s /usr/share/fonts/X11/misc /usr/lib/X11/fonts/misc
And then resintalling the package.
(Too many places where fonts could be ?)

I have tried this on two machines running Hardy, one that was upgraded from
Gutsy and one that was installed from scratch.
xfonts-base 1:1.0.0-5
I do not get this error on either of them.
