I had similar problem with my HP Compaq nx6325 laptop.
Putting
options snd-hda-intel model=hp position_fix=1 enable=yes
at the end of file
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base
helped.

I just tried this, and it made my boot proccess freeze with a ACPI message
that just scrolled right off before. I had to add 'noacpi' to the kernel
options to get it to boot.
But then it still didn't work. Maybe you'll have more luck!

I've got the same problem with my new Fujitsu Siemens Amillo Xi1526.
With plugged in headphone the normal speakers are still active.
It works under Windows.
Soundchip driver is intel-hda.
I've found this as a possible solution:

It doesn't work in Ubuntu, but it does in Windows.
