least the printing part of your printer was introduced with HPLIP 3.10.6
(in Ubuntu Maverick, 10.10). For scanning you will definitively need

For Deskjet 2050 All-in-One J510 series printer, the minimum HPLIP version
required is 3.10.9. currently you have installed 3.10.2.
upgrade to latest version of hplip will fix the issue.

Which version of Ubuntu are you using? AFAIK your printer was supported
for the first time in Ubuntu Maverick (10.10).
Can you run the following commands in a terminal window and post the
output here:
