I talked with Alex Lau about this, who indicated that this is a locale-
specific question; zh_CN users want something slightly different from
zh_HK, for instance. language-selector has a mechanism for dealing with
this, and it's likely that it needs to be updated a little bit. I've

Anyway, I think this should be fixed in Ubuntu so that this behaviour is
the default.

I guess one character in your screenshot comes from the Japanese font
Kochi Mincho and the other comes from a Chinese font, because Kochi
Mincho comes before the Chinese fonts in the standard aliases (serif,
sans-serif, and mono) of the default font.conf.
