It sounds like the -i810 driver may have been used, which is now
deprecated in favor of -intel. Please re-test this against -intel in a
newer version of Ubuntu. If it works in Feisty or Gutsy, we can close
this bug as fixed; if the issue still persists even in Hardy, then this
would be high prior
Closing the xorg component since filing against -intel is sufficient.
(If you see similar issues with other hardware, please file them as
separate bug reports).

The reason why 16bit works is probably because the older intel chips
needed that for DRI with i810 driver. Please check the "intel" driver if
it works better with 24bit.

I'm glad it helped, nickytl, but I wouldn't say "problem is fixed", but
rather "we have a workaround". The goal of these bug reports is still to
improve the distribution, isn't it?
The workaround will be useless for someone who needs to have color depth
at 24 for some other reason.

I changed default color depth to 16 from 24 and problem is fixed. Thank

It's a PIII with an embedded i810 vi
I forgot to mention that when dapper didn't work I upgraded to edgy,
which still doesn't work. The hwinfo is from edgy.

The system on which this occurs uses the i810 driver, but another system with
the same driver works. The video hardware on the non-working system is
reported as:
pci.subsys_vendor = 'Dell'
info.product = '82810E DC-133 CGC [Chipset Graphics Controller]'
pci.product = '82810E DC-133 CGC [C
This doesn't appear to be a bug in Xubuntu but maybe in your video
driver or X. Could you tell us more about your computer?

I also saw this on a thinkpad X22 when using the Vesa X-Server.

I should mention that the graphics card is an embedded intel 810 on a
Dell OptiPlex GX110 (PIII @ 666 MHz). Also the screenshot has been
cropped (no need for the entire window).
