Same problem, however it is also true for mplayer and Ogle. I'm actually
not sure how to set either of those, so if advised, I will go and test
settings in those out.
As for gxine, I'm happy with 20480 (I could only set it as 20506),
however I didn't find it useful to set that for brightness

You'l just have to adjust it and save the setting, as you have done. I
find that the default setting works well on my Radeon 9200 but not on my
i945, where I find that 20480 works well for both contrast and
brightness.
I'm leaving this open in case anybody wants to provide reasonable
defaults for
