I think this is related to the fact that this particular laptop has an
hybrid graphic card. Whenever the integrated card (intel) is off this
and other problems show up. For example, if the intel card is off,
trying to access the webcam freezes the computer. If the integrated card

I was unable to recreate this on 2 different systems - one running Natty
and one running Maverick. I'd guess this is hardware specific.
