Azureus crash problems is a known issue which took time to get fixed.
You can install azureus version 2.5.0.4-1ubuntu3~gutsy1 in Linux Ubuntu
Gutsy with backports repositories enabled, this version fixes the crash
problem.

It would seem unlikely that the root cause is in the JDK as there are very
few shell scripts included (specifically the launcher is native):
