The behavior you're seeing is caused by the raw keycodes generated when you press a key on the keypad when numlock is not engaged - the arrow keys generate sequences that include the 'Esc' key, and the 'Esc' key is the magic key that toggles plymouth between graphical and details mode. You can sim

I have seen the same behavior you describe on my ubuntu 10.04, whenever I forgot to activate Num Lock key. It is quite annoying, but you can use Home key (if I remember it correctly) to return back to plymouth boot screen. What I think is a lot worse is that there seem to be no way I know of (with
