I'm sorry to report that this bug is still unresolved in Natty. I'm
using dpkg 1.16.1 and the procedure to reproduce is:
Create a directory structure like this:
debian/
debian/DEBIAN
debian/DEBIAN/control
debian/DEBIAN/postinst
debian/usr/
debian/usr/local/
debian/usr/local/HUGE-FILE-BIGGER-THAN
Guillem has indicated that the necessary fix, 9980e450..86cbf575, is
included in Raphael's pu/multiarch/snapshot/20110314 snapshot which is
the most recent one included in Ubuntu. Marking this as resolved.

Guillem Jover tells me that this should be fixed in dpkg 1.16.0. I'm
not sure whether the snapshot we have in natty is quite new enough.

everything is fine if the resulting deb file is over 1 GB. The
corruption only appears if the deb file is bigger than 2 GB.
