I had the same problem, unable to upgrade from 10.04 to 10.10 that
resulted from having previously upgraded KDE. I preformed the suggested
steps:
A alternative (and prefered way) to test is:
$ bzr get lp:~ubuntu-core-dev/update-manager/maverick
$ cd maverick/DistUpgrade
$
I ran the tool and got a dialog with this content:
Could not calculate the upgrade
An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade:
Trying to install blacklisted version 'blcr-dkms_0.8.2-13'
This can be caused by:
* Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Running the cur

export RELEASE_UPRADER_ALLOW_THIRD_PARTY=1
or edit the file:
/etc/update-manager/release-upgrades.d/uprades.cfg
and add

Quirk would be that when Kubuntu's backports PPA is being used on Lucid
it should be replaced with Kubuntu's updates PPA on Maverick.
ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports replaced with ppa:kubuntu-ppa/ppa

I have the same problem. Upgraded to KDE 4.5.3 using KpackageKit and backports
repository.
Will I ever be able to proceed to a newer Kubuntu release??
