Martin Pitt and Michael Vogt, Does this (python-apt_0.7.100ubuntu1) update have something to do with this bug here? It says: * tests/test_apt_cache.py: - fix tests to work if apt compressed indexes are enabled -- [Natty] apt_0.8.8ubuntu3 seriously slows down synaptic https://bugs.launchpad

Martin, You are of course right about this. My system only seemed to be OK. The speed lasted two boot ups. After that, it was extremely slow again and I had to downgrade to the 0.8.8ubuntu2 version to recover this issue. So this is definitely not fixed yet. -- [Natty] apt_0.8.8ubuntu3 seriously

New update 0.8.9ubuntu2 fixes this bug. I do not know if the properties that caused this bug (enable of compressed indexes) was withdrawn. Perhaps Martin Pitt can comment on this. ** Changed in: apt (Ubuntu) Status: In Progress => Fix Released -- [Natty] apt_0.8.8ubuntu3 seriously slows

BTW, it's still fast with ubuntu3 and uncompressed indexes in /var/lib/apt/lists, and still slow with compressed indexes and ubuntu2, so it's not a toolchain/C++ issue. -- [Natty] apt_0.8.8ubuntu3 seriously slows down synaptic https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/675641 You received this bug notificat

This happens when enabling compressed indexes (which ubuntu3 now does by default), I can reproduce this here. ** Changed in: apt (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided => High ** Changed in: apt (Ubuntu) Status: New => In Progress ** Changed in: apt (Ubuntu) Assignee: (unassigned) => Mart
