Same problem here. However, it was working properly with a fresh install
of 10.10 in November,, and then broke after getting updates sometime in

I guess the original problem that this bug described is in the
policykit-1-gnome package. The other problem with the dialog box hanging
around is covered by bug #445303.

I also suffer from the hanging authentication dialog but also in places
other than update manager.
I think the dialog is somehow launched by /usr/lib/policykit-1/polkit-
agent-helper-1 as that process appears at the same time as the
authentication dialog. After entering the password, the process

Yes, the same problem on my laptop. The dialog asks for the password two
times, but the second time don't shows the password input. If you close
the dialog, then you have su access and all went well.

I am experiencing the exact same thing.
Authentication dialog appears, enter password, authentication dialog
reappears with no field to enter password. Closing the dialog using its
window controls allows the software to proceed, authenticated.

I get the same behaviour.
10.10 upgraded from 10.04
It isn't only with update-manager, but with most system-level things.
The authentication box opens, I enter my password, then it demands
authentication again with no password dialogue. Closing the box allows
the upgrade to proceed.
