Thanks for report this bug and sorry for the inconvenience. Unity in
Ubuntu-10.10 could be called an experimental release from which many
lessons have been learnt. In Natty unity was almost written with new
better technologies and it is believed that this problem should not
happen in Ubuntu Natty N
Is there a reason this is marked as [i915GM] - i.e. is there a belief this is
GL related?
I just ask since my i945GM is also missing the top bar today, but I notice in
the logs a:

I've got a similar Problem. After upgrading from Ubuntu 10.04 to 10.10
I've could only sometimes see the menubar - was hollow and now fonts
were displayed. Since unity needs OpenGL (or something like this?) I
installed the ATI fglrx driver via synaptics. Made the problem worse:
