There was no core file otherwise, I would have started gdb and included
it here ;)
This can be closed. I reinstalled Ubuntu 10.10 and the problem went
away.

If this really is doing as you claim -- that is, producing a menu then
logs you out -- please check for a corefile (assuming the surrounding
environment allows for it -- see "ulimit -c" beforehand) and get a
backtrace.
I am not convinced it is crashing though.
