Problem returned: Authentication window hanging. I run sudo apt-get
clean and reinstall the packages (update-manager_1%3a0.142.20_all.deb
and update-manager-core_1%3a0.142.20_amd64.deb) and it works for a while
(maybe until you reboot) and then again not. If you reinstall again and

Thank you Fabio, this indeed solved the problem. I ran sudo apt-get
clean and reinstalled the packages - since then I updated three times
and authentication worked every time. Thanks again, bug report can be
closed now.

sudo apt-get clean
then from Synaptic reinstall update-manager and update-manager-core to see if
fix?
