Well, I believe i945 is modern. But you are probably right about missing
extension:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ compiz --replace gconf
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ libGL warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x5b
compiz.real: GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap is missing
compiz.real: Failed to manage screen:
(note that these days the i815 driver does have texture_from_pixmap
support on modern intel cards)

This is probably Bug #3 again... (i.e. it's your graphics card
drivers not compiz or xgl)

Compiz got a bit faster after allocating more RAM to card (by VideoRam
directive in xorg.conf), but:
a) it's still slow
b) by customizing xorg.conf I'm losing all future changes caused by package
updates.
