You didn't have to compile anything, I pointed you to the PPA where I
rebuild the official Debian packages before they get into Ubuntu.

That's what's available in Ubuntu 9.10 ('apt-get install mc' tells me
that I've got the latest version.) I've downloaded and compiled the
latest stable, and you're right - it's gone. The standard version in
Ubuntu should be handled, though.

How come you are using such an old version? I can't reproduce this on
latest stable:
