xinput test 9 (my touchpad device) shows that both left and middle
buttons map to button 1.
The temporary fix for this via: xinput set-button-map 9 1 2 3
I am having the same issue. It worked fine before I upgraded, now I am
running 10.10 and it doesn't work anymore.
I am generally trying to copy from gnome-terminal and paste into either
another terminal, or into a windows app via RDP. This all worked before
the upgrade.

Turns out the bug seems to be that my middle mouse button has simply
stopped working for any purpose on Ubuntu 10.10
