Another workaround is:
sudo rm /usr/share/emacs/site-lisp/dictionaries-common/*.el
sudo rm /usr/share/emacs23/site-lisp/dictionaries-common/*.elc

i'm seeing this too, but the provided patch doesn't seem to fix it for
me.
or maybe it's a different problem. it would be nice if flyspell provided
a better error message than "gave an error."
