I changed(sold and bought an imac instead) the computer, so I cannot
test this anymore at that ubuntu version, neither at a current one;
seems pretty dead to me.

Hi, as the imac update has not yet came, I´m with my HP touchsmart
still. Now with Ubuntu Natty the workaroud by Cris does not work
anymore. If anyone find a new solution post it here, so I can test
before changing PC or just for the others(if by the time of reply I have
already sold my Hp Touchsma
Also I forgot to tell I will be getting a new computer very soon, an
imac. I will try ubuntu there, but i won´t be able to help with this
specific bug anymore, hope I was of some help in fixing this terrible
issue for future hp touchsmart users.

Ignore the last reply, there is something overworking at that situation,
but I´m not sure if it is the computer cooler fan or the cd drive. I got
the same problems in the current natty release, will be trying again the
same stuff, hope it works.

Also, when starting ubuntu text mode is initialized first then graphical
mode enters, things which I do not verified in previous ubuntu versions
in my old computer. Also when entering text mode or shutting down the
computer, the screen goes blue, then with 3 colors rectangles, then it
goes gray, th
I said perfect video before, but, well...there is an almost
imperceptible issue, which is graphics showing almost invisible,
parallel horizontal lines, with 2mm space between them, lines which do
not show in Windows.

I tried, just in case, to install the video driver ubuntu way now, above
the manual nvidia driver install and custom xorg.conf. It worked! I find
strange which now it worked and before not, but anyway, the custom xorg
file above was changed by the ubuntu jockey, but it is working normally,
perfect
I noted I cannot run games in wine too, because they say there is no
video card

ChrisSteinbach, your solution worked for me, thanks a lot! In my case there are
some details thought:
1-using nomodeset I could actually see what I was doing
2-text mode with network, failed me(3G usb minimodem), I just mounted my
windows partition, which had the linux nvidia driver
3- I use nvid

graphic way. It seems the HP touchsmart video card isn´t properly

I learned which the HP touchsmart offboard video card slot is diferrent.
It is what is called MXM type-a, a little know kind of slot for
changeable notebook video cards. Hope this bit of info helps.

Yes, have tested with the 32-bits version already. I only recall which I
haven´t tested lucid x64, but with my conection speed this image would
take 2 or 3 days do download. One of the guys of the bug I mentioned
about nvdia drivers got a black screen at recovery mode too.

Have you given a try to the 32-bit image? Does this hardware work with
an older version of Ubuntu.
Usually if the graphic mode doesn't work, recovery mode should work as
expected, but you say that you see a black screen.

I found a bug much like this one(bug 616023), but it was marked as
fixed, maybe i this problem was fixed for some types of nvidia video
cards, and for others, like mine not. Hope this helps

You will most likely need the nvidia binary drivers to get the
resolution expected. You can achieve graphically by going so "System >
Administration > Additional Drivers". If you really cannot use the
graphical interface at all, there is another way- boot while pressing
shift, then select recovery
