I have the same issue and also the laptop battery status is also
duplicated:
Laptop battery is charged
Laptop battery is charged
Cell phone (100.0%)
Cell phone (100.0%)
Restarting gnome-power-manager removes both duplicates.

I noticed that if I kill gnome-power-manager and start it again while
the phone is plugged in, it reports it once, as it should.
