The same problem can be seen in Kubuntu 10.10:
- change the font to Déjà Vu Sans and a size of 10
- save => everything ok
- Settings - System Settings - Login Screen - Theme - Get New Themes - Installed
- exit without saving anything and your font is reset immediately to Ubuntu 9
