I have the same problems, both with the fglrx and the radeon driver, so
it does not seem to be related to that. I also have an x700 card.

Hi
I've tried booting without Xgl/compiz and the issue remains.
Then I've booted with edgy beta live cd and the image looked correct,
and my virtual terminals worked fine.
Any ideas?
