Yes, you are all 100% correct this is because avahi is not running
There is a bug open uptream for a GUI dialog to display this information

- you must edit /etc/default/avahi-daemon
- then start the daemon : /etc/init.d/avahi-daemon start
maybe a fix to this issue would be to popup a window.
This window would explain that the deamon is not running and could
explain how to activate it

Have the same problems avahi-discover when I try to open it I get a
crach. I do get a problem report that I can send.

It's a know one. You must modify /etc/default/avahi-daemon to make the
daemon start.

True, the daemon isnt running on my system, but it should. it is enabled
in the "services" UI. also, when i do
sudo /etc/init.d/avahi-daemon start
is doesn't start.
