For me, using pavucontrol worked. But the Problem resist, that the
Phonon's device preferences only show the device selected with
pavucontrol, not all available devices.

installing and using pavucontrol to select the desired output.

Same Problem here. kmix only shows analog Output which is working, but
could not choose digital Output.
System Kubuntu 10.10
Onboard Sound ICH10: 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801JI (ICH10
Family) HD Audio Controller
Alsa seems correctly detected the digital Output Device:
