I have tested it now on localhost and it works. I don't know if it has
fixed or has only something to do with amd64 architecture. I haven't an
amd64 system anymore so I can't check it.

Supplying vlc -vvv debug output with these kinds of errors usually helps
a lot as well.

There are a considerable number of fixes from the 0.8.6 branch;
furthermore they're being pulled from the Debian Sid source package.
Feel free to backport them all to 0.8.5 and to submit the resulting
debdiff to the MOTU media team.
