graphics card problem is another bug, which is now fixed in feisty
(after herd 2).

I had the same issue with an ATI X700 Pro in my desktop. I've solved it
changing "ati" to "radeon" in /etc/X11/xorg.conf

I have the same troubles with my laptop (same video card and display). I
tried Edgy RC, but the bug is still there.

Since you had to add MonitorLayout option, I think this bug is duplicate of bug
22985.
Recent ati driver update helps in detecting monitor layout and it works on some
systems that did not work before.
Can you re-test this with Edgy Release Candidate?

Booting in single mode, if I use the xorg.conf attached and then
ctrl+alt+backspace, the screen is no more blank and I can use the
system! Maybe you need to change the default xorg.conf for my hardware
