The attachment "update-notifier.gettext.patch" of this bug report has
been identified as being a patch. The ubuntu-reviewers team has been

I'm seeing the same thing in Precise. The code in notify-reboot-required
makes a reference to cases when gettext is not installed, but it doesn't
actually work. I've attached a patch, which should work.

This should be fixed in update-notifier. Since translation isn't
critical, I suggest that notify-reboot-required should detect whether
the gettext binary is present and if not then simply use the
untranslated string.
