This is, sadly, by design. Because of the long standing GTT-incoherency
bugs (see master bug #541511), we disabled the Intel driver on i855
hardware.

Ditto on a Dell 700m. The external monitor can only "clone" the laptop
display. Pressing Fn + F8 (CRT/LCD) button does nothing.

Did a Compiz check got this:

I too have a Dell 700m, NO compiz,
I tried the uninstalling via Synaptic but no help...Still no Compiz
effects...
Did a compiz --replace and got this:
r...@ron-laptop:~$ compiz --replace
compiz (video) - Warn: No 8 bit GLX pixmap format, disabling YV12 image format
compiz (cube) - Warn: Failed
After updating via update manager yesterday (official 10.10 release
date), I removed all Compiz components via Synaptic and reinstalled
them. Compiz works again!! I have no idea why that worked or why it
didn't work when I removed Compiz the first time - but it's worth a try.
But make no mistake
I can confirm the same bug.
+ I have sloppy video playback.
Thinkpad x40
Lucid has none of these problems.
Just for the protocol - when upgrading desktop effects were set to none...

I am also affected by this. I have a Dell Inspiron 700m. xrandr does
not even detect the external monitor attached by VGA. Lucid worked well
for me.
