Install the generic kernel. If you already have it, remove it first.

My kernel in dapper was 686 w/smp. After upgrading to Edgy, I now have
the 386 kernel with no smp. How to I get smp back?

The generic kernel gets installed with clean install but since you were
using -386 in dapper and upgraded that most likely that is why 386 is
default. Im changing this to a wishlist as this is not a bug.
