My session was still running netbook-launcher, which did nothing (no
longer exists?). When I added /usr/bin/unity to my startup applications
I get a grey background.

Via terminal.
Upgrade -> Maverick got rid of netbook-launcher, so I had no desktop --
just a Gnome panel.
