I confirm the same problem with GNOME (Ubuntu) or XFCE (Xubuntu) and a Voodoo
Banshee AGP (a Maxi Gamer Phoenix if it matters).
I first suspected the lack of RAM (128MB) of the PC, but Xubuntu should
apparently run fine.

I'm using a Voodoo 3 3000 PCI (16 Meg). It will load Gnome until the
desktop image shows up. Then it restarts GDM. For KDE, it will run
until I load an application such as Firefox or Konqueror
