You can change the folder by opening ~/.vmware/preferences and setting
prefvmx.defaultVMPath = "/path/here" to whatever you wish. I agree that
it doesn't make much sense and have filed a bug upstream.

It's the default location to look for VMs. It's behaviour that's
inherited from Workstation - it admittedly makes less sense here because
the player can't create VMs.
