After looking into other problems I'm having, I found that this problem
is related to fglrx. Apparently, the fglrx driver doesn't load properly.

Same effect here. I've got an IBM T60 laptop equipped with ATI X1400.

I think I have the same problem with my radeon when using fglrx in Xorg but the
kernel module is not correctly loaded.
Could you provide me the output of lsmod|grep fglrx
