In HEAD, I added a GConf key for toggling this behavior, that defaults
to the requested behavior. The status should be changed to fixcommitted.

I completely agree. I use the desktop a lot as a temporary file space
and the open terminal extension used to make dealing with new downloads
or random files very efficient. (on my gentoo it strangely did cd to
~/Desktop... can't check right now because my RAM on that machine is
bust). It would be
