While I can reduce the resolution usplash runs at, I wasn't the one that
selected the resolution (ie usplash did) and hence I feel it should use
the proper resolution.
I realise it's impossible to have graphics but I think there's an easier

All of the USplash resolution bugs are tying together, and depending on
the monitor is how they are displayed. This issue is being worked on,
and as you said is almost a 50/50 on bug/wishlist. They are looking at
it further from a development standpoint

sudo nano /etc/usplash.conf
It should look similar to the following:

xres=1024
yres=768
If you make changes, make sure you issue the following command:
sudo update-initramfs -u

I have the same problem with a slightly different laptop (Asus A6V, ATI
X600 based) but the same resolution. Config file appears correct:
