Xrandr also works for me, in my case I did:
xrandr --output HDMI1 --left-of LVDS1
So, to me it appears to be the gnome-display-properties program that is
broken, since xrandr works w/no problems.

Me too! I tried to set the laptop monitor to off and enable the external
monitor (VGA).

I was trying to "off" the external monitor (HDMI) through the monitor
settings tool. I was not able to. Repeated clicking of apply caused the
crash
