Ummm... rather embarrassingly I found out what the problem was... I'd
previously had the Netbook Edition installed at 10.04 and then
subsequently removed it before I upgraded to 10.10... Turns out that I
still had Maximus installed Having un-installed Maximus, normal
operation resumed. My
This seems to be an upgrade problem. Please try an upgrade of empathy
to 2.32.92-0ubuntu2 and see if this helps.

are you using Ubuntu unity? if so can you please check in gconf-editor
/apps/maximus and see if empathy is blacklisted. if not add it to that
list and start empathy again.
