I'd prefer if the window borders were not black (I chose a light theme
to get away from all the black), but they are too thin. I also find it
difficult to resize windows in Maverick.

It can take some extra effort to resize a window from any edge. It's
frustrating.
The edges for resizing is 1 pixel thin. You have to move your mouse
exactly on the edge to resize. Using a touchpad makes it even more
difficult.
