sorry for my slow reply (was bed time I've just got up) segfault was a good

I reinstalled the packaged version and now I'm getting more sensible
startup times. I'm sure I've tried this before, though...

OK, I tried building wine from git, but it just segfaulted on startup
(it segfaulted /quickly/, though :))

Same version, although the problem's been there with every version I've
used since I moved to Dapper in April.
I haven't tried building it myself, yet.

Have you tried to build your own from wine's GIT repository?
winecfg (from edgy's wine repository) for me loads in about 4 seconds.
