These two commands fixed my problem:
sudo ln -s /usr/lib/usplash/usplash-theme-kubuntu.so
/etc/alternatives/usplash-artwork.so
sudo update-initramfs -u
Now bug 63541 and bug 64570 are also fixed... Strange but good for me.

I upgraded yesterday to Edgy Eft (apt-get dist-upgrade) and also get
this strange geometry-splash. Just did those commands of the second
comment, will try later if that worked.

Sorry, forget to ask: and does exist a link /usr/lib/usplash/usplash-
artwork.so, pointing back to /etc/alternatives/usplash-artwork.so? The
usplash-default.so link in /usr/lib/usplash/ does no longer exist.

And the link in /etc/alternatives is correctly named usplash-artwork.so,
pointing to /usr/lib/usplash/usplash-theme-ubuntu.so?

I did update my initrd after fixing the link. Does not work.

Did you update your initrd again after fixing the link? If not: simply
type a `sudo dpkg-reconfigure usplash` (or the above mentioned `sudo
update-initramfs -u`), then it should work.

I now get the splash when I reboot the machine. The link in /etc/alternatives/
to usplash was broken. Fixed that to point to
/usr/lib/usplash/usplash-theme-ubuntu.so
. The boot usplash problem still remains.

Kubuntu fix via command line, and Ubuntu and the rest should be similar:
##For /usr/lib/usplash link, do
sudo ln -s /etc/alternatives/usplash-artwork.so
/usr/lib/usplash/usplash-artwork.so
##For /etc/alternatives usplash link do.
sudo ln -s /usr/lib/usplash/usplash-theme-kubuntu.so
/etc
Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Edubuntu, or Xubuntu? I just had this same issue and
fixed it?
