Thanks for your hint. It made me to look around a bit, so I discovered
that there is also an option --auto-remove. The apt.conf you showed is
better for me, however.
Regarding the documentation, please have a look at the following diff,
if it can be used to document this nice feature in man.

I would appreciate help on documenting this better. It should be pretty
straightforward to add to doc/apt-get.8.xml
The solution is to add the following to /etc/apt/apt.conf:
APT::Get::AutomaticRemove "true";
