Hello !
I have a clue : it seems to be related to the nVidia proprietary
drivers. I could reproduce the problem on an openSuSE fresh install :
sound works out of the box, is lost after install of the drivers and
comes back after uninstalling it ...

Already installed 1.0.23 from source using this procedure :

No effect.
Tried to add a "model=3stack" in the config file (also described in the
mentioned post), no effect ...
Tried to remove the pulseaudio config files, no effect.

Could you please update your alsa drivers, as outlined here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/InstallingLinuxAlsaDriverModules and
reboot. Once you reboot, plesae check to see whether you hear audio.
