A dirty fix ( what I did) was to edit the menu entry and change it from gksu
to gksudo... my change was merely for a couple GUI apps I use regularly.
Axe's solution seems more system wide and just as easy.

I apologize, I have since done a backup and clean installation with
10.10...
To answer your question, when I originally posted the bug I did not
edit the preferences for the application in the menu. I dropped to a
shell and ran sudo synaptic, which had no issues. It appeared that
gksu was the culp

And as described in #3 comment, running gksu-properties and settting
authentication mode to sudo will fix your issue?

Could you attach the content of /var/log/installer/media-info.
Just type $ cat /var/log/installer/media-info in your terminal.
I would know whether your system is fresh install or upgraded.

I am experiencing the same issue in Lubuntu 10.10 beta. Running gksu-
properties and changing authentication mode to sudo fixes the problem
for me. Why is this not default?
