I had the same problem and I did the patching. However, it didn't change.
Gwibber won't update my Twitter stream.

Could you close the Gwibber and run it from bash shell through "gwibber-
service -do" to see if it shows the same error messages as Jens listed
here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gwibber/+bug/617395
If the error messages looks the same, maybe you can try my patch
