It seems that the memory leak was not the source of all slowness and
there is still some of it left (duplicate status is wrongly fixed).

Please re-open the bug.
I'm using Unity 0.2.44-0ubuntu1 and the places take 29 seconds (!) to show up.
Just for the five standard bookmarks...
I'm on a Lenovo S12 with 2 gig RAM, Atom N270 and Nvidia Ion GPU.
