I have done a number of additional tests. These tests include starting
in recovery mode, starting with the option nomodeset and removing the
process gnome-power-manager. Here are the results:
Recovery mode
Blinking cursor half way down the screen - No menu or prompt appear.
Pressing fn-f7

"When it freezes, can you press control-alt-f1 and get to a text
terminal?" - No. I do not get a text terminal when pressing ctrl-alt-f1.
(I have confirmed that this combination works when the laptop is not in
frozen)

you get back to the graphical environment, and does it work again?
