Right, the issue is that .etckeeper permissions tracking is not
completely integrated into git (or bzr, for that matter).
You need to run "etckeeper pre-commit" to regenerate the .etckeeper
file, before running status :) If you ignore .etckeeper, then
permissions changes would not be committed.

Yes, very sure - if it was touched in the initial commit that means it's
version controlled.
etckeeper will update that file when permissions or owners/groups of
that file change.

this happens even with "git commit .etckeeper $file" or "git commit
.etckeeper". I did a "git log .etckeeper" and the only time it's been
touched so far was the initial commit. Are you sure this file is
version-controlled?

The fact that it shows up in the Changed but not updated section is due
to the nature of git, which requires you to explicitly add all the
changes to the index before committing.

I'm still new to etckeeper, so please bear with me if I'm just simply
misunderstanding.
My /etc is under git control. I thought I should be able to make
commits straight via git as well. If I change a file under /etc and
then do "git commit $file" .etckeeper will show up under the "# Changed
but
Can you expand on why this file should be in the ignore list ? That file
is intended to be version-controlled.
