I have this mainly with embedded youtube, on youtube.com they do play.
They start in any case but video lags terribly while sound continues.

to make sure it wasn't any plugins causing it.

I noticed this too and it's exactly like the post

found disabling compiz-fusion fixed it and if you re-enable it you
cannot click the stop button or any controls.

This appears to be an issue with Firefox and the adobe flash player.
Chromium in Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid) installed with Synaptic Package Manager
works like a champ.
